Consumption of fresh grains – invitation to Diabetes

In this fast modern world, most people do not bother about the specific details of what they are eating. They do not try to know whether it is fresh or old, properly cooked or not. In ayurveda there is lot of information available regarding the food what we eat. Traditionally, people in various parts of the world were consuming 1 year aged grains. They were never consuming fresh grains unless during drought. This was because they knew it predisposes them to Diabetes (prameha in ayurveda). In an ancient text, Charaka Samhita, Chikitsa Sthana 6th chapter, it is written:

Asyasukham (1) swapnasukhm (2) dadhini (3) gramya oudaka anupamamsarasah
(4) payamsi (5) Navannapanam (6) gudavaikrutam cha pramehahetuh kaphakruccha sarvam.

  1. Over enjoyment of food
  2. Lack of physical exercise
  3. Consuming yoghurt and other milk products all the time in large quantity.
  4. Everyday, excessive use of the meat of pig, fish, buffalo, beef (cow meat)
  5. Milk of different animals
  6. Fresh grains (non-aged rice, millet, etc. except wheat, barley, sesame, & black gram)
Note: All fresh grains increase kapha, and are heavier than old grains. Hence to maintain health 1 year aged grains are best. For Type-2 diabetis mellitus patients aged wheat barley, rise or millet are always good.
  7. Fresh wines (generally wines should not be consumed new of fresh because it causes heaviness, imbalances vata, pitta and kapha whereas old wines promotes circulation in the body, increases digestion, light and creates taste in the food).

Hence, we can attribute consumption of new rice and other cereals to the increasing number of diabetics in the world.
